Kemp Named Phillips 66 Co-Big 12 Player of the Week

DALLAS — University of Kansas senior forward Crystal Kemp was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week by a media voting panel for games played during the holiday break, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Kemp shared the honor this week with Oklahoma freshman Courtney Paris, who was also named Big 12 Rookie of the Week. The honor was the second for Kemp this season and the second of her career. She was also was voted Player of the Week for games played Dec. 5-11.
During the holiday period, Kemp led the Jayhawks to victories over Creighton, Pepperdine and La Salle. Kemp averaged 22.7 points and 8.7 rebounds in that span. Behind Kemp’s play, Kansas improved to a perfect 11-0 in non-conference play for the first time in program history.
The Topeka, Kan., native posted 16 points, eight rebounds, two steals, two blocks and an assist while playing 39 minutes in a 63-52 win over Creighton. After the holiday break, Kemp missed her career-high by one point as she finished with 27 points, nine rebounds, one block, one steal and one assist in 38 minutes of action in a 73-60 win over Pepperdine. Two days later against La Salle, the Topeka, Kan., native pumped in 25 points to go with nine boards, three blocks and an assist in a full 40 minutes.
Kemp played all but three minutes in the three-game span. She shot 49.1 percent from the field and 94.1 percent from the charity stripe. She has scored 20 or more points in four of the last five non-conference games.
She becomes the first KU player to win two Big 12 POW awards in a single season since Lynn Pride did so in 1999. Kemp is the only two-time winner in the Big 12 so far this season.
