LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Spring practice officially opened for the University of Kansas softball team outdoors Friday in preparation for its season-opening tournament at the Kajikawa Classic Feb. 6-8 in Phoenix, Ariz.

The team reported back to campus Jan. 8 and met for a fun-filled night of dinner and games. The Jayhawks’ mini camp opened Friday morning and the team will have two-a-day practices until next Thursday when classes begin.

“We are very excited to open the season and get our preparation underway,” said head Kansas softball coach Tracy Bunge. “The team has been working very hard during the offseason and we are looking forward to our season opener in Phoenix next month.”

Kansas begins the 2009 season Feb. 6 against UTEP and Arizona at the Kajikawa Classic in Phoenix, Ariz. The Jayhawks return 13 letterwinners, including eight starters, and welcome five newcomers to this year’s squad.
