In its Big 12 Conference opener, the Kansas women’s basketball team lost to the Kansas State Wildcats Saturday night in Bramlage Coliseum, 72-39.

Kansas fell to 11-3 for the second-straight season and 0-1 in Big 12 Conference play. Kansas State kept its undefeated record intact, improving to 14-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12 Conference. Ashley Sweat led all scorers with 18 points in the victory.

The Jayhawks got off to a shaky start in the first half and never recovered as Kansas State held the Jayhawks without a field goal for just over five minutes. The Wildcats used the opportunity to score nine unanswered points and go up 33-17 at the 3:53 mark. Kansas broke the drought at the 3:22 mark, but the Wildcats stretched the lead to 18 points to take a 39-21 lead in to the locker room at the half. KU committed 11 turnovers to KSU’s two, and shot its fourth-lowest field goal percentage in a half this season (37.5).

The second half was more of the same for the Jayhawks as Kansas State held Kansas to another scoring drought of just over four minutes. KSU stretched the lead to 33 points late in the second half as Kansas continued to struggle on the offensive end, shooting just 32.7 percent from the floor, its lowest percentage of the season.

Junior Sade Morris led the Jayhawks with 12 points and junior Danielle McCray contributed seven points and eight rebounds.

Kansas is back in action against the Missouri Tigers on Wednesday, Jan. 14 in Allen Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
