Postgame Quotes

Kansas 49, Texas Tech 57

Jan. 17, 2009

Head Coach Bonnie Henrickson

On the lack of shooting rhythm:

“We certainly took our fair share of bad shots. A shooter’s got to feel a rhythm and everybody else has to feel panicked to go get an offensive rebound. Our effort to the offensive glass was terrible and this isn’t the first night it has happened. We must have a lot of confidence in the person taking the shot because we don’t even work to get an offensive board. That’s what is most disappointing. We had some bad shots in there, but Krysten (Boogaard) doesn’t work to get close position. She hides behind it. We try to throw it over their length, and they knock it down and force a turnover. She’s got to work and our guards have to find her. We missed a lot of shots that we were capable of making, but there was never any rhythm or good flow.”

On Texas Tech’s zone defense:

“We’ve seen zones before and we weren’t too surprised. We just got too excited. Krysten (Boogaard) didn’t touch it at all. She tries to call for the lob over a girl with length and we don’t drive it or play the paint. Against a zone, we play the three. Our first few possessions, we jacked up three’s. That’s immaturity on our part and not playing together. This is the most selfish we have played, both defensively and offensively. We were just out of rhythm and out of sorts.”

On the aggressive play to close the game:

“The best effort we had was at the four minute mark (in the second half). Where was that at the start of the game? Where was that coming out of the locker room? We just didn’t have it.”

Junior Forward Danielle McCray

On the game:

“It was a night where we just didn’t shoot the ball well. We were dealt a critical blow when Sade (Morris) went down with injury. We needed somebody to step up and we didn’t get that. Then LaChelda (Jacobs) stepped up and got to the basket for some layups. I was really off tonight. I couldn’t find a rhythm for anything. I tried to get shots inside, but with their athleticism I couldn’t get anything to go. My shot just wasn’t on. It was horrible.”

On her recent slump:

“I don’t really know what I am going through right now. I have been in the gym shooting a lot. I don’t know what it is, I just need to get out of it. It needs to come quick. I think it is both shot selection and then a slump. Early in the game I wasn’t taking good shots.”

Junior Guard LaChelda Jacobs

On the Nebraska game:

“We have to get in the gym tomorrow and get some shots up and try to get our confidence back. Hopefully we can get some of our rhythm back. Nebraska has an incredible defense. They have one of the best defenses in our league so we are going to have to play well. I think as long as we get our confidence back we will be fine.”

Junior Guard Kelly Kohn

On the game:

“It was just really frustrating for us. We are just inconsistent right now. We just don’t know what to expect from ourselves right now. We were hyped up and ready to go for the Kansas State game and for the outcome to be what it was is really unexpected. We consider ourselves just an amazing offensive team and to struggle so much behind the three-point line was really tough. It wasn’t like one person was off tonight, we were all off and that is tough for us to overcome.”

Texas Tech Head Coach Kristy Curry

On the game:

“The biggest thing is to focus on the positives. The positives are that you can come into this arena and hold them to 49 points (for the game) and 17 in the first half. And we outrebounded them by 13. As ugly as it was down the stretch, I think it speaks volumes for the kind of character and the kind of team that they are. You knew that they were not going to go away, so I think you have to give Kansas credit for how the finish was instead of being critical of how we finished it. It is very hard to win on the road in this league, and anytime you can get one, you can’t put a price tag on it. It’s invaluable for us, both for the standings and for our confidence.”

On defending Danielle McCray:

“I thought Ashlee Roberson’s length did something to McCray that made a big difference for our team defensively. I thought that we were really able to bother her at times with Ashlee’s length.”

On the turnovers at the end of the game:

“I thought a lot of our woes down the stretch could have been because I thought our kids played so hard defensively. I thought we really played hard defensively. To come in and do what we did in our matchup zone against the number one shooting team in the league says a lot about our ball pressure tonight.”

Senior Forward Dominic Seals

On the controlling the paint:

“Kierra (Mallard) did a good job on Krysten (Boogaard). She was tough tonight. And we limited (Nicolette) Smith from the outside, so I think I have to give the credit to the freshman (Kierra Mallard), because she did well today.”

Senior Guard Maria Moore

On the victory:

“For us, it helps build our confidence a little bit more. It lets us know that we are able to win on the road.”
