KU’s freshmen class followed up a strong showing on Wednesday with an even better performance on Thursday, as Emily Gorham, Maria Martinez and Magdalena Tokarczyk each picked up singles victories. Gorham’s win over Hawaii’s Beswick was the Boerne, Texas, native’s first as a Jayhawk.

Senior Stephanie Smith, who missed the entire fall season with an ankle injury, won her second match in as many tries, besting Alabama’s Wettermark, 7-6 (4), 6-1. Also tallying victories for Kansas were senior Elizaveta Avdeeva and junior Edina Horvath, who each won in straight sets.

In doubles play, Gorham and freshman Kate Goff tallied their first career win, defeating Hawaii’s Beswick and Tanaka, 8-4. Torarczyk and Martinez also picked up a doubles victory over Alabama’s Wettermark and Godwin.
