Postgame Quotes
Iowa State 75, Kansas 48
January 20, 2007

Head Coach Bonnie Henrickson
On points in the paint:

“Last year they (Iowa State) went 6-for-23 from three-point range. They kept shooting the three in their loss with us last year. This year, they stopped shooting three’s and went inside, and they were opportunistic in their three-point field goal attempts in the first half. They just hammered it inside, and their posts did a great job sealing off. We just didn’t move our feet, and we looked like we were velcroed to the back of their shorts.”

On being better down low:
“We will have to, but we have to have some heart and pride from down there. Every team in America has kids that are hurt. We have to step up, get around and fight, and show some intensity. We don’t want anybody here to feel sorry for us. We just have to get it right.”

On KU’s shooting performance:
“We got good looks. At least half of our shots in the second half were open looks. We just didn’t knock them down. We will get it right. These teams don’t come here to look that bad, or be that bad, we’ll bounce back.”

Kansas Player Quotes

Senior guard Shaquina Mosley
On her performance:

“I didn’t expect to play that much, but she (Coach Henrickson) needed me so I tried to do the best that I could. I realized that I have to play through them (mistakes); you can’t live in the past because you can’t change it. I just try to play through it, get a big stop on the other end, and change what I need to change on offense. It’s a loss so I don’t really consider it a big game for me. I did what I had to do to help the team and I tried my best.”

Freshman forward Porscha Weddington
On her play:

“I need to work on my defense more. I can’t hold my head down and I need to continue to improve. I need to come ready to practice and anything I can do to make improvements.”

On upcoming opponent Kansas State:
“We go game-by-game and we have been focusing on Iowa State up until this point. We will start focusing on Kansas State first thing on Monday.”

Opponent Quotes

Head Coach Bill Fennelly
On the game:

“They always do a great job of chasing us off of the three point line, but our post players played really well. Nicky (Wieben) and Toccara (Ross) were really good. Defensively, we were really solid. (Shaquina) Mosley really hurt us, but other than that I thought we defended well. I told the girls before the game, that we need to prove that the Texas game was not a fluke. Kansas is building their program at this point, they are not at the same level of a Texas yet, but at the same time you need to prove that you can keep playing. We have had a very good 72 hours, and I am very proud of them. We showed a lot courage and commitment. We are back to where we need to be– one home loss, and one road win. We’re even and this one was big in a lot of ways.”

On getting big games from the posts:
“Their philosophy, and not just against us, is to guard hard on the perimeter, chase us off the three point shot, and they did it to us, like they do against everyone. We felt like that we could score in the posts. We did in the first game, and we challenged our kids and talked about it. Our post players took good care of the ball and we finished well around the basket. Overall, I thought all of our post players showed some good things, but obviously Nicky and Toccara were really good, and Toccara was big-time good.”

On the difference between the two contests with Kansas:
“When you shoot 64% in the first half, that helps, but I think our players understand what kind of team that they want to be. They understand what they are capable of doing. We’re not a team that is going to go out and do a lot of fancy things. It’s boring but that is the way we have to play.”

Junior Forward Toccara Ross
On coming off the bench:

“Obviously, I’d like to start, but it feels a lot more comfortable coming off the bench.”

On the game:
“This is one of my better games. I’m learning to relax a little bit. Lately, I’ve been making a lot of mistakes but I’m just trying to get over those mistakes and move onto the next possession. We want to go inside first and then settle for outside shots. Tonight, we packed it inside and scored big-time inside.”

Senior Guard Lyndsey Medders
On the game:

“We’re now 3-3 and have beaten two pretty good teams, one on the road, and now we are going to roll the dice down in Norman, Oklahoma.”

On the difference between the two contests with Kansas:
“I think we played better. At Iowa State, we shot 46% and we did not even play that great. We are a young team, too.”
