Mayrovich Wins the Big 12 Swimmer of the Week Award

Jan. 28, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas swimmer Maria Mayrovich was named the Big 12 Swimmer of the Week Wednesday afternoon. Mayrovich, a native of Novorossiysk, Russia, set a new Robinson Natatorium record in the 100 yard freestyle against South Dakota and Northern Iowa. The senior has only been defeated one time in 2009–to teammate and two-time NCAA Qualifier Danielle Herrmann.

This is the second time Mayrovich has earned the honor, her first Big 12 Swimmer of the Week award came in November of 2007. It is the first time for the 2008-09 season that a Jayhawk was given the award.

“It is a big award,” said Mayrovich. “I was not expecting to receive it. I’m really glad. I’m just going to try and keep doing what I am doing and hope that it will carry over to the Big 12 (Championships). It is a big accomplishment.”

Mayrovich owns KU’s top times in the short freestyle events. She is also a key member to the Jayhawks’ medley and freestyle relay teams. Below are Mayrovich’s recent performances that earned her the Big 12 Swimmer of the Week award.

“The program is very happy for Maria,” said head coach Clark Campbell. “She is very deserved of the award. She has had a very good January and we have created a lot of momentum for the rest of the season. She feels very honored.”

Mayrovich and the Jayhawks will be back in action for a two-day dual meet against Iowa State on Friday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. Following the Senior Day meet against ISU, KU will prepare for the Big 12 Championships on Feb. 25-28 in Columbia, Mo.
