Jayhawks Wrap Up Successful Showing at New Balance Collegiate Invitational

Feb. 5, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

It was another great day in The Armory Track & Field center for several members of the Kansas track and field team on Saturday. Six Jayhawks finished in the top five of their individual events while 12 set personal or team bests in the 14 events they competed in. This came just a day after KU had six members place in the top five of their events with seven marking season bests, making this meet one of the more successful competitions the team has participated in this year.

The highlight of the meet came from thrower Mason Finley, who set a meet record in the shot put with a throw of 20.40m (66-11.25ft.). This throw also netted him a first place finish in his event and set the tone for the rest of the Jayhawks for the remainder of the meet. Finley was honored as the Male Athlete of the Meet for his record setting performance.

Saturday would prove to be another memorable day for several members of the KU squad including Amanda Miller, who ran a 9:46.11 3,000 meters in route to a second place finish. This time would turn out to be the senior Miller’s career best. Kyra Kilwein, Tessa Turcotte, and Kara Windisch also competed in the 3,000 meters. Kilwein finishing 11th with a time of 10:00.10, Turcotte, 14th with a time of 10:05.66 (a personal best), and Windisch running in 10:12.40, notching her a 19th place finish.

Jayhawk freshman Diamond Dixon continues to impress as she clocked in at 53.93 in taking fourth place in the women’s Championship 400 meters. Dixon’s time marked a new personal best for her and ranks second on the KU all-time chart.

Junior Cori Christensen set a season best in the 800 meters with a time of 2:11.97. This mark put her in third place finish in the event and was the third highest finish by a Jayhawk on the day.

Another solid performance on the women’s track came from Junior Rebeka Stowe, who finished fourth in the mile run with a PR and season record setting time of 4:46.62.

On the men’s side Dalen Fink, Brendan Soucie, and Nick Seckfort each produced personal bests in the 800 meter run. Fink finished fourth with a season best time of 1:54.36, while Soucie and Seckfort finished 20th and 21st with times of 1:55.45 and 1:55.50.

Freshman Josh Munsch had another PR and season best setting performance for the Jayhawks in the mile run. Munsch notched a time of 4:12.67 which was good enough to elevate him to 8th place. Donny Wasinger competed in the competitive championship division mile run and finished 7th with a time of 4:26.05.

The Jayhawks did not disappoint in the field events as well with the highlight coming in the men’s pole vault competition. Alex Bishop tied for the second highest finish by a Jayhawk on the day with his second place finish for a jump of 5.00m (16-04.75ft.). Fellow pole vaulter Cooper Merrill recorded a sixth place finish on a jump of 4.90m (16-01.00ft.). In the women’s triple jump Andrea Geubelle set a season best with her fourth place finish. Scoring a jump of 12.86m (42-02.25ft.).

The men’s and women’s 4X400 meter relay teams ended KU’s trip to the Big Apple with high-quality performances. Kyle Clemons, Dominique Manley, Pieter Marx, and Keron Toussaint ran a season best time of 3:12.39, which put them in sixth place on the men’s side. Kendra Bradley, Diamond Dixon, Denesha Morris, and Taylor Washington finished in 9th in the women’s competition on another season best mark of 3:42.74.

The Jayhawks will again be in action next weekend with several members of the team traveling to Ames, Iowa for the ISU Classic and others making the trip to Fayetteville, Arkansas for the Tyson Invitational.
