Zagurski Leads KU to Doubleheader Sweep of Hawaii-Hilo

KONA, Hawaii – Senior pitcher Mike Zagurski combined with two relievers to lift the University of Kansas baseball team to a 6-0 victory over Hawaii-Hilo in game two of a doubleheader at Simmons’ Field in Kona, Hawaii, on Sunday.

The win gives the Jayhawks a 3-0 lead in the series and a sweep of the day’s doubleheader. Earlier on Sunday, KU took game one by the score of 7-6.

Kansas begins the season 3-0 for the first time since 2002, when the team began 10-0.

Zagurski (1-0) collected eight strikeouts and allowed only three hits in seven innings to help give the Jayhawks their second shutout victory in their first three games.

Freshman Logan Murphy threw a scoreless eighth inning and senior Michael Fitch pitched the ninth to complete the shutout.

The Jayhawks were able to break a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning by plating four runs in the frame. Freshman second baseman Ryne Price tripled with runners on first and second to drive in two runs and three batters later junior center fielder Matt Baty added a two-run double to give the Jayhawks a 4-0 lead.

In the seventh inning, Kansas was able to tack a pair of runs on to its lead to open a 6-0 advantage. Junior shortstop Ritchie Price led the inning off with a single and scored two batters later on a single by senior catcher Sean Richardson. Richardson would come around to score himself later in the inning on a sacrifice off the bat of freshman third baseman Erik Morrison.

The loss drops Hawaii-Hilo to 0-7 on the season.

Kansas and Hawaii-Hilo will continue the series on Monday, when the two teams will square off at Wong Stadium in Hilo, Hawaii. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. local time (10 p.m. CST).
