Mauna Lani, Hawaii –

Nate Barbee shot his best round of the event with a final round 73 at the Hawaii-Hilo Invitational to lead the Kansas men’s golf team to a 15th place finish at the Mauna Resort North Course.

Barbee tied for 69th place and was the top finisher for the Jayhawks. Barbee was the top-finisher for the Jayhawks in three of the four fall events.

“The weather was better today and that helped scoring, but I think we played better today,” said head coach Kit Grove. “This is still pretty early for us to play in a tournament because the guys just haven’t been able to get much work in to get ready for the tournament.”

Senior Walt Koelbel fired a 77 to finish tied for 72nd place. Freshman Blake Giroux rebounded from a second round 88 to card a 75 in the final round and tied for 74th place.

Senior Andrew Storm shot his best round of the event with a final round 76 and finished tied for 83rd place. Freshman Ian Anson shot an 80 and finished 90th.

Southern California shot a 282 in the final round to win the event by 11 strokes over Washington. Richard Lee, of Washington, won medalist honors with a three-round score of 210.

The Jayhawks will next be in action March 9-10 when they travel to Lafayette, La. to compete in the Cajun Classic. Check back to kuathletics.com for complete coverage of the 2008-09 season.
