KU remains a perfect 3-0 during the tournament and improves to 8-1 overall on the season. The Cougars drop to a 7-2 mark.

BYU got on the scoreboard first with a run in the opening frame but Elle Pottorf answered right back for the Jayhawks in their first at-bat with an RBI line drive over the second baseman’s head into right field. It marked the junior’s third hit in three games this weekend.

The Cougars used a two-run homer in the second to take back the lead at 2-1 but it wouldn’t stick for long.

The Jayhawks strung together three runs in the bottom of the second to take over the lead at 4-3. Freshman Liz Kocon got things started with a single that slipped through the right side. Junior Stevie Crisosto moved Kocon over on what was suppose to be a sacrifice bunt but she reached first safely on a bad throw. Both runners advanced one base on a wild pitch. Sophomore Sara Ramirez then walked on a ball four that slipped passed the Cougars’ catcher allowing Kocon to slide home for a run. Dougie McCaulley stepped up to the plate next and used a hard hit single that bounced past the second baseman to score Crisosto and Ramirez, her third and fourth RBIs of the season.

Jobe hit a pitch over the right field fence to lead off the fifth inning and give KU a two-run cushion.

Sarah Vertelka opened the game pitching two complete innings and allowing all three of BYU’s runs. Freshman Allie Clark pitched the final five innings holding the Cougars scoreless to record her second win of the season. The 6-0 freshman notched six K’s from the circle.
