Kansas Swimmer Maez Honored by Big 12 and Chick-fil-A

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Senior University of Kansas swimmer Amanda Maez has been honored by the Big 12 Conference and Chick-fil-A as a member of the 2011 Winter Community of Champions for her hard work in and out of the pool, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Maez is a freestyle specialist from Albuquerque, N.M., who was named a First Team Academic All-American by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America and an Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection for the 2009-10 season. After finishing her athletic eligibility, she plans to attend KU for a fifth year and earn a degree in Biochemistry with a minor in Chemistry, as well as a teaching license to teach secondary education.

During the fall, winter and spring terms, one student-athlete from each institution is honored as part of the Community of Champions by the Big 12 Conference, in conjunction with Chick-fil-A, based on the following criteria:

Academics: An academic standard of a 3.00 grade point average or higher must be maintained.

Community Service: The designated student-athlete should be involved with at least one community service program. The program(s) could be a student organization on campus or within the athletics department.

Leadership/Sportsmanship: The student-athlete should demonstrate leadership and sportsmanship on and off the field.

The institution of the student-athletes on this list will be awarded $3,000 each year from Chick-fil-A for their efforts.
