Feb. 17, 2009

LUBBOCK, Texas –

Kansas senior catcher Buck Afenir has been named to the preseason All-Big 12 Second Team by the Lubbock Avalanche Journal. The publication named projected all-conference performers Tuesday, selecting Texas A&M senior Luke Anders as the preseason Player of the Year and Oklahoma State’s Tyler Lyons as the projected Pitcher of the Year.

Afenir, a senior from Escondido, Calif., is coming off a junior season that saw him set career highs in home runs (nine) and RBIs (42). The 6-foot catcher is a .271 career hitter and has 21 home runs in a Jayhawks uniform. Last season, Afenir was named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention.

Texas A&M, Texas and Missouri each had four players selected pre-season All-Big 12, with the Tigers leading the way with three first team picks.

Kansas opens the 2009 season on Friday with games against Air Force (1 p.m.) and Memphis (4 p.m.) as part of the Service Academy Classic in Millington, Tenn. Both games can be heard via streaming audio on kuathletics.com.
