Feb. 19, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Coming off a two-week break, the Kansas women’s tennis team (4-1) will travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to compete against DePaul (8-2) and the University of Iowa (4-4) this weekend, Feb. 21-22, at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreational Center. Kansas will take on DePaul at 10 a.m. on Saturday and the Hawkeyes at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

In its last outing, KU split a pair of matches with Illinois and Illinois-Chicago in Champaign, Ill. The Jayhawks fell to the Fighting Illini, 7-0, but bounced back to defeat UIC 4-3.

The Jayhawks will look to senior Yuliana Svistun and freshman Ekaterina Morozova to lead them again after their performances against UIC. The Svistun/Morozova doubles tandem provided the only doubles win of the dual, and each won her singles match as well. Sophomore Maria Martinez and freshman Erin Wilbert both look to win back-to-back singles matches also.

DePaul is led byGia McKnight, who currently holds a team-high five singles-match winning streak. The Blue Demons shut out Butler on Feb. 13 and came from behind for a big win against then-No. 30 Indiana on Feb. 14. DePaul is 3-2 against ranked opponents so far this season.

The No. 75 Iowa women’s tennis team is coming off a pair of losses as it fell 6-1 to both Alabama and Mississippi on the road Feb. 14 and 15. Sonja Molnar, the 98th-ranked player in the nation, provided the Hawkeyes with their only singles wins of the weekend. Iowa will face DePaul on Saturday at 3 p.m. before taking on the Jayhawks on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Following the trip to Iowa, Kansas will play UMKC in Kansas City, Mo. on March 1 at 2 p.m. before returning to home competition on March 6 when it hosts Brigham Young University at 1 p.m at First Serve Tennis Center.
