GAINESVILLE, Fla. –

For the second-straight game, senior Sara Ramirez hit a game-winning home run. The Kansas softball infielder hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Jayhawks to a 3-1 victory versus East Carolina.

The win was KU’s second of the day after defeating Campbell just one game earlier. The Jayhawks had just four hits against the Pirates but made them count as they improved their record to 4-5 overall. East Carolina fell to 2-6.

Freshman Alex Jones led off the game with a single into shallow left field but it was the only offense Kansas would generate for the next five innings as ECU pitcher Toni Paisley retired 16 consecutive batters, including 11 strikeouts.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, freshman Rosie Hull broke the hitless streak and reached base on a grounder to third base. On the next play, she was thrown out while Jones made it to first on the fielder’s choice.

Freshman Maggie Hull stepped up to the plate next and hit a fly ball to left field just outside the foul line, but ECU’s left fielder missed a diving attempt and hit the ball with her glove to make it a fair ball. As the ball rolled into the corner, Jones rounded third and slid safely into home plate.

Ramirez then cleared the bases with a two-run shot over the left field wall to push Kansas ahead 3-1. In KU’s 2-1 win versus Campbell, Ramirez hit a home run in the fifth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit.

The Pirates scored the first run of the game in the top of the sixth frame after a triple-single sequence to start the inning and take a 1-0 lead.

Senior pitcher Sarah Vertelka recorded her first win from the circle throwing a complete game effort. The right-handed hurler scattered seven hits throughout the contest, struck out one batter and allowed no walks.

Kansas will wrap up the weekend Sunday morning (tomorrow) with a single game versus Marshall at 10 a.m. CT.
