Powers Helps Kansas To Tie For 12th In First Spring Event

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – A day after shooting a one-over par 73, Emily Powers fired an even-par 72 to lead the Kansas women’s golf team to a tie for 12th at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Golf Classic Tuesday.

All five Jayhawks recorded better rounds on Tuesday than they shot for Monday’s second round as KU shaved 16 strokes off its team score on the final day. For the tournament KU shot 303-314-298 for a 915 total. Miami won the 33-team event with an 892 score.

Powers’ even-par final round included two birdies and one double bogey to go along with 15 pars. Starting on the 12th hole, Powers opened the day with four straight birdies. She went to one-under par with a birdie before carding a double-bogey on the very next hole. Powers then registered nine straight pars before making another birdie and closing with two more pars.

Powers was followed by Jennifer Clark, who shot 74, Grace Thiry at 75, Meghna Bal at 77 and Meghan Gockel at 78. As a team on the final day, the Jayhawks combined for six birdies with every player recording at least one

Powers finished the event tied for 11th with a three-round total of 221. The senior started slowly with an opening round 76 before responding with a 73 and a 72 on the final two rounds. Thiry tied for 41st at 229 with Clark tied for 69th at 233, Gockel tied for 75th at 235 and Bal tied for 81st at 237.

Kansas will return to action at the Duramed/Rio Verde Collegiate at Rio Verde, Ariz. March 5-7.
