Kansas Women's Golf to Compete in Sir Pizza Cards Challenge

Feb. 25, 2012

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas women’s golf will continue its spring season after two weeks of rest when it competes in the Sir Pizza Cards Challenge Feb. 27-28 at the Weston Hills Country Club in Weston, Fla. Head coach Erin O’Neil was happy to have those two weeks to focus on the areas the Jayhawks need to work on.

“We have continued to work on all parts of our games the last two weeks,” coach O’Neil said. “However, the focus was on spending more time on the range than normal since one of the areas we struggled a little with at the last tournament was our approach shots into greens.”

Senior Katy Nugent, along with junior Audrey Yowell, sophomores Meghan Potee and Thanuttra Boonraksasat and freshman Nadia Luttner will represent the Jayhawks at the tournament hosted by Louisville. Gabriella DiMarco will compete as an individual after finishing tied for 85th in her first tournament of the spring season at the UCF Challenge.

The Jayhawks are coming off a 16th place finish at the UCF Challenge led by Nugent who finished tied for 38th. Coach O’Neil believes being more experienced coming into this week’s tournament will bode well for Kansas.

“This course sets up well for us,” coach O’Neil said. “We competed here last year so the familiarity will definitely help our confidence. If we play focused and smart golf, we can have a good finish at this event.”

Joining Kansas at the Sir Pizza Cards Challenge is Big 12 foe Missouri. Non-conference competition includes host school Louisville, Texas State, N.C. State, Florida International, Cincinnati, Miami, UNCW, South Florida, Memphis, East Tennessee, Delaware and Southern Mississippi.
