Freshman pitcher Kristin Martinez threw seven innings of two-hit ball and gave up no runs while junior Marissa Ingle’s RBI double in the seventh lifted Kansas softball over Minnesota 1-0 in the UNCG Spartan Classic championship game.

KU avenged an earlier loss to the Golden Gophers on Friday in the tournament opener and went 4-1 on the weekend to improve to 14-1 overall. Minnesota fell to 7-7 with the loss.

“Kristin Martinez has to be heralded for her performance today,” said head coach Megan Smith. “They couldn’t touch her. She took command of the game and kept command and we are really proud of her.”

In the top of the seventh inning, freshman Ashley Newman beat out a throw to first to safely reach base for KU’s fifth hit of the game. Ingle then stepped up to the plate and roped a double down the left field line as Newman scored all the way from first base in what ultimately became the game-winning run.

Sophomore Mariah Montgomery also got on base in the seventh with a double up the middle but Minnesota caught freshman Marisa Malozzo, who was running for Ingle, stealing and then ended the inning with a strikeout.

The Golden Gophers’ Sara Moulton fanned nine Jayhawks during the pitcher’s duel but gave up seven hits, including two to senior Brittany Hile.

Kansas also had an opportunity to score in the sixth when it loaded the bases with just one out in the inning. Unfortunately Minnesota came up with a double play at home plate and first base to end the frame.

Martinez allowed just six Gopher base runners all game and struck out five as she improved to 6-0 from the circle.

Kansas returns to the diamond next weekend for the UNLV Eller Media Stadium Classic March 4-6 in Las Vegas, Nev.
