KU Ends Day With 9-0 Win Over Tulsa

Three Jayhawks notched home runs to lift Kansas to a 9-0, six-inning win against Tulsa Friday night to wrap up Day One of the Great Western Downtown Plaza Classic. The Jayhawks (9-5-1) will continue tournament action against <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>North Texas at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.

Senior ace Kassie Humphreys (7-1) struck out seven and allowed just three hits in five innings to take the victory. Freshman reliever Sarah Vertelka fanned one batter and kept the Golden Hurricane scoreless in the final inning to seal the game. TU’s Julie Fennell (3-4) gave up 10 hits, struck out six and walked four in the complete-game effort.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Nine different Jayhawks notched hits in the victory. Junior Betsy Wilson led paced the offense with two hits while senior Nicole Washburn and sophomores Elle Pottorf and Tiffany Craner each notched a home run.

The Jayhawks broke open the game with three runs in the top of the fourth. Freshman Amanda Jobe walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Val Chapple. Freshman Sara Ramirez reached on a fielder’s choice and Humphreys notched a base hit to center to score both runners and pick up two RBI. Humphreys moved to second on a wild pitch by Fennell and scored on Wilson’s RBI single up the middle, 3-0.

Pottorf notched her second home run of the day and third of the season, a solo shot, to give KU a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning. Washburn added to the Jayhawks’ lead with a three-run homer to left center, the second of her career, in the top of the sixth. Humphreys (walk) and junior Addy Lucero (infield single) scored on the blast as KU went up 7-0 against the Golden Hurricane.

Two batters later, Craner, pinch hitting for Jobe, notched her first career home run off the scoreboard in right center. The two-run knock gave the Jayhawks a 9-0 lead and in put them in position for the run-rule victory.
