Kansas to Compete in Louisiana Classics

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas’ men’s golf team will compete in its second tournament of the spring season when the Jayhawks travel to Lafayette, La. to compete in the 26th-annual Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club, March 7-8. Kansas competed in its first spring tournament a week ago and placed 12th at the Wyoming Desert Classic with a score of 916.

Head coach Kit Grove has opted to make one lineup change going into the Louisiana Classic, replacing junior Doug Quinones with sophomore Dan Waite. Waite competed in four tournaments during the fall season, posting a scoring average of 77.63 and finishing in 44th place at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate, a season-best. Joining Waite are: seniors Nate Barbee and Jeff Bell and sophomores Chris Gilbert and Alex Gutesha.

Barbee tied for 68th among individuals at the Wyoming Desert Classic, shooting rounds of 80, 76, and 79 en route to a 235.

Bell was disqualified in the second round, but managed to shoot a 76 and 79 in the first and third rounds, respectively.

Gilbert shot rounds of 77, 77, and 72 en route to a 226 and a top-25 finish among individuals.

Gutesha was the standout for the Jayhawks, shooting a 74 in all three rounds for a grand total of 222, which tied for 12th place among individuals.

Quinones, who was replaced by Waite, shot rounds of 85, 81, and 76 for a total of 242.

Kansas has competed in the Louisiana Classics the past two seasons, finishing in ninth in 2009 and 15th in 2010. Walt Koelbel highlighted the tournament for Kansas in 2009, tying for third place with a score of 211. Barbee tied for 28th with a score of 222 last season.

Other teams in the field include Louisiana-Lafayette, LSU, Illinois, UAB, Kent State, Southern Miss, Southeastern, SMU, Memphis, Houston, UALR, Tulsa, Texas State and South Alabama.
