Jayhawks Sweep Doubleheader and Series, With 7-1 Victory

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The University of Kansas defeated Western Illinois, 7-1, Sunday in the second game of a doubleheader at Hoglund Ballpark. With the win, KU improves to 13-4 on the season and have won seven straight games.

Sophomore Erik Morrison capped off a spectacular day going 2-for-4 with two homers and five RBI in the second game. On the day, Morrison accounted for three long balls and six RBI.

Kodiak Quick picked up the victory for the Jayhawks improving his record to 3-1. The senior pitched seven solid innings and allowed no earned runs while scattering six hits. Closer Don Czyz replaced Quick and pitched the final two innings to pick up his Big 12 leading eighth save of the season.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, Gus Milner started the frame with a double to left-center. Allman singled and moved to second on a fielding error by the Leathernecks left fielder. The error also allowed Milner to trot home to tie the game at one. Morrison drilled a two-run homer to cap KU’s three-run fourth inning.

Sophomore Brock Simpson hit a solo home run to right-centerfield to give KU a 4-1 advantage in the seventh inning. Simpson also hit a home run in game one of the double dip.

Morrison put an exclamation on the game and his day with a three-run blast in the ninth inning. The multi-home run game was Morrison’s second of his career, as he pulled the trick last season against the Leathernecks on Feb. 18.

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Wednesday, March 8 against Baker. Game time at Hoglund Ballpark is set for 3 p.m.

Game Notes: Erik Morrison and Brock Simpson hit home runs in both games of the doubleheader … KU swept the season series from WIU for the fourth year in a row and are now 12-0 against the Leathernecks all-time … Don Czyz’s eighth save ranks him third on the `Hawks single season record list … KU outscored the Leathernecks 23-8 in the three-game series.
