LAWRENCE, Kan. – That’s a way to leave an impression. Playing in their final regular-season game in Allen Fieldhouse, Carolyn Davis scored a game-high 27 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, Angel Goodrich dished out 12 assists and Monica Engelman added 14 points and six rebounds to lead Kansas to a 74-67 win over TCU on Senior Night Tuesday.
Davis logged the 23rd double-double of her career, Goodrich topped her previous season high for assists and Engelman did what she does best, put the ball in the basket as the Jayhawks (17-12, 8-10 Big 12) ended the regular season on a positive note with a win over the Horned Frogs (9-20, 2-16). KU junior guard Markisha Hawkins poured in a career high with 15 points in her first start.
Freshman Kamy Cole steered the Horned Frogs offensive efforts with 15 points, all of which were from long range. Sophomore Natalie Ventress helped TCU by getting 14 points, and Veja Hamilton logged a double-double with 12 points and tied Davis for a game-high with 11 boards.
TCU controlled the pace early, but with 8:04 left in the first half, Bunny Williams got a pass from Goodrich and knocked in a layup that started a Kansas 14-4 run over 5:34. The run ended with the Jayhawks ahead, 33-30, to give them their first lead of the contest and Kansas went into the half up 37-36.
The Horned Frogs took advantage again early in the second half, but the Jayhawks kept it close and never trailed by more than five. At 5:47 left in the second half, Engelman hit a three to reclaim the Kansas lead for good, 60-57.
Kansas pushed the lead to as many as eight with just under a minute to play, but a jumper by Hamilton and an steal on the inbounds pass followed by a three from Ventress cut the deficit to three with 36 second to play. TCU tried to foul to gain extra possessions, but the Jayhawks hit all six free throw attempts down the stretch to hold on.
With the regular season now complete, the Jayhawks’ next action will be in Dallas, Texas, for the Big 12 Tournament at American Airlines Center. The Jayhawks will play Friday night at 8:30 p.m., and these two teams will meet again with Kansas being the No. 7 seed and TCU as the No. 10 seed in the tournament.
