A two-run home run from junior Brittany Hile broke a 2-2 tie to help the Kansas softball team overcome UIC 4-3 in game one of the Coach B Classic.

Kansas improved to 8-8 with the win, while UIC fell to 4-7 overall. The Jayhawks play again on Saturday (today) at 4 p.m. versus host Southern Illinois.

Despite being out-hit 10-7, KU was patient at the plate to earn its advantage in runs. Hile broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run home run, her second of the season. She scored Mariah Montgomery, who reached on a walk.

Hile, who finished with a team-high three RBIs, drove in another run during the Jayhawks’ first at bat. Her single to left field in the first inning plated Maggie Hull. Junior Allie Clark also batted in a run for KU in the first frame drawing a bases loaded walk to bring in freshman Alex Jones.

The Flames scored all three of their runs on solo homers. After KU took a 2-0 lead, UIC responded in the top of the second inning with back-to-back round-trippers. The Flames rallied again in the top of the seventh inning with a one-out home run but the Jayhawks retired the next two batters to end the contest.

Jones threw a complete game striking out a personal-best seven batters and allowing no walks as she improved to 3-3 from the circle.
