Kansas Rolls Past Sycamores, 9-1, In Home Opener

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Even 30-degree weather couldn’t stop Kansas’ offensive from heating up as the Jayhawks connected for nine hits to score nine runs against Indiana State and win 9-1 in a shortened, five-inning game in the Jayhawks’ home opener.

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Kansas improved to 16-5 overall and 1-0 during the Jayhawk Classic, while the Sycamores fell to 4-7 and 0-1 in the tournament.

Senior Addy Lucero had a career day batting in five runs for KU on a pair of hits. Sophomore Ally Stanton, who also had two hits, junior Stevie Crisosto and freshman Brittany Hile all added one hit and one RBI a piece.

Junior Elle Pottorf also crushed her second home run of the season in the fourth inning as she moved into sixth on KU’s career home run list with 15.

KU and the Sycamores were tied 1-1 after two innings but the Jayhawks sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of third and strung together four consecutive hits to help score five runs. Kansas added three more tallies in the fourth frame thanks in part to two Sycamore errors

Sophomore Sarah Vertelka threw the first three innings to tab the victory as she improves to 5-2. Vertelka allowed only two hits before being relieved by freshman hurler Allie Clark for the final two innings of play.

Kansas resumes play in the Jayhawk Classic Sunday afternoon. All of the day’s contests have been moved back a half hour with KU facing Pittsburgh at 12:30 p.m. and IndianaState again at 4 p.m.
