March 11, 2006

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The University of Kansas tennis team fell to 47th ranked Iowa, 4-3, Saturday at Robinson Courts. The loss drops KU to 5-4 overall this season.

The day began with Iowa taking two of three doubles matches from the Jayhawks. KU got a win from its tandem of Christine Skoda and Brittany Brown, 8-3, over the Hawkeyes’ Hilary Mintz and Milica Veselinovic.

The two teams then split the six singles matches, with Kansas’ Elizaveta Avdeeva, Lauren Hommell and Stephanie Smith notching victories. Smith, who was reinserted into KU’s lineup Saturday, defeated IU’s Krissy Dowlin, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 6 slot.

Avdeeva, who dropped the first set, 3-6, to Mintz, battled back to win the second set 7-5. The sophomore then won the third set in super-tiebreak format, 10-4.

The Jayhawks will look to bounce back on Sunday when they host Big 12 Conference-foe Oklahoma State. Match time is set for 11 a.m. at Robinson Courts, however, the match will be moved to First Serve should the weather become a problem.
