Jayhawks Add FC Kansas City to Spring Slate

March 11, 2013

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas soccer team will play an exhibition contest versus the National Women’s Soccer League’s (NWSL) FC Kansas City on Saturday, March 30 head coach Mark Francis announced Monday. The match will take place at Shawnee Mission North High School Stadium in Overland Park, Kan.

The FC Kansas City contest completes a 12-match spring exhibition schedule for the Jayhawks, who have already begun their spring slate, dropping the opener to Nebraska 3-2 on March 1. The FCKC game will be KU’s sixth of the spring as the Jayhawks will be coming off a 10-day tour through Europe, which will feature four international matches in four countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy) between March 18-22.

FC Kansas City is preparing to open the NWSL’s inaugural season on Saturday, April 13 in Overland Park versus the Portland Thorns. KU will see a familiar face on the FCKC lineup as former Jayhawk Whitney Berry is preparing to begin her first season with the club. Berry was drafted by FC Kansas City in the third round of the NWSL’s collegiate draft on Jan. 18. The Wichita, Kan., native ended her career as KU’s all-time leader in assists (32), No. 2 in career points (78) and tied for third-most all-time with her 23 goals. She was also No. 2 on the school charts in shots, amassing 267 during her four-year career.

Kickoff from Shawnee Mission North High School Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. (CT) on March 30. Log on to KUAthletics.com for complete coverage from each of the Jayhawks’ spring contest and follow on twitter at KU_Track.
