Kansas Tennis Travels to Texas to Open Big 12 Season

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas tennis begins its conference season after concluding non-conference play with an 8-4 record, including three consecutive victories over New Orleans, Saint Louis and Cleveland State.

The Jayhawks open Big 12 Conference play with a Texas road trip featuring matches against Texas A&M at 4 p.m. on Friday and No. 32 Texas at noon on Sunday.

The Aggies, led by No. 63 singles player Elzé Potgieter, No. 67 Nazari Urbina and No. 111 Morgan Frank, are coming off a 4-3 defeat of No. 14 Arkansas. Potgieter and Frank make up the No. 49 doubles team, while teammates Stephanie Davidson and Sheri Olivier stand at No. 77. Texas A&M comes into the match 5-5 overall and 0-0 in the Big 12.

The Longhorns, coming off a 4-3 decision over SMU, are led by No. 23 singles player Aeriel Ellis, No. 51 Krista Damico and No. 60 Vanja Corovic. Corovic and Ellis also make up the nation’s No. 52 doubles team. Texas is 4-3 on the season and will open up conference play when it hosts Kansas State on Friday.

Kansas is led by sophomore Ekaterina Morozova at No. 1 singles and junior Maria Martinez at No. 3 singles. Martinez has won seven of her last eight matches and holds a 9-3 record overall. Six Jayhawks boast winning records so far this season.

“We will have some tough opponents this weekend, but we are excited for the challenge” said head coach Amy Hall-Holt. “It is the beginning of a new season and I am excited to see what it brings.”
