Kansas Returns to NCAA Tournament; Faces Colorado

LAWRENCE, Kan. – For the second-straight season and for the 13th time overall, Kansas women’s basketball will be a part of the NCAA Tournament, as the No. 12-seeded Jayhawks will take on former Big 12 Conference foe and No. 5-seeded Colorado on Saturday, March 23 at approximately 5:30 p.m., at the Coors Events Center in Boulder, Colo. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
This is Kansas’ second trip to the NCAA Tournament under head coach Bonnie Henrickson, as the Jayhawks advanced to the Sweet 16 last season with wins over Nebraska and Delaware.
KU enters the 64-team event with an 18-13 overall record and an 8-10 mark in Big 12 Conference play. The Jayhawks posted wins over nationally-ranked Iowa State (22) and Oklahoma (19) this season. Kansas is led by seniors Angel Goodrich, Carolyn Davis and Monica Engelman, each a 1,000-point career scorer.
Goodrich, a 2013 First Team All-Big 12 selection, is a finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Award, Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, Wade Trophy, Wooden Award and Naismith Award. The all-time assist leader in Kansas history, Goodrich is second on the team with 14.2 points per game and owns a team-best 216 assists.
Davis leads the Jayhawks in both scoring (15.7) and rebounding (6.7), and is on pace to finish her Kansas career as the most-accurate field goal shooter in school history. Engelman ranks third on the team with 9.4 points per game and is second with 82 assists on the season.
The winner of the Kansas-Colorado game will face the winner of the South Carolina-South Dakota State contest on Monday, also at the Coors Events Center.
Kansas owns a 35-33 all-time record against the Buffaloes and has won the last five meetings. Henrickson is 10-5 all-time against Colorado, which was a member of the Big Eight Conference from 1958 until 1996 when the league became the Big 12 Conference in 1997. The Buffaloes left the Big 12 in 2011, and joined the Pac-12 Conference prior to the 2011-12 season. Kansas handed Colorado its final Big 12 defeat when the Jayhawks knocked CU out of the 2011 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship with a 71-45 victory at the Sprint Center, in Kansas City, Mo.
Colorado enters the tournament with a 25-6 record, including a 13-5 mark in Pac-12 Conference play, and finished fourth in the league. Colorado was beaten 61-47 by Stanford in the semifinals of the Pac-12 Tournament. The two teams have one mutual opponent this season in California. Colorado lost both Pac-12 Conference meetings against the Bears, while KU dropped an 88-79 non-conference game at Cal on Dec. 16.
