Kansas Loses To #17 Northwestern, 6-2

HONOLULU, Hawaii –

The University of Kansas softball team lost to #17 Northwestern (15-6 overall), 6-2 on Monday, March 20. The loss drops the Jayhawks to 15-14 overall.

Kansas hit three doubles in the game (freshman Val Chapple, senior Jessica Moppin and sophomore Betsy Wilson), but were unable to convert them into more runs, as the team stranded seven runners in the game.

NU got on the board in the bottom of the first with a single by Katie Logan. Garland Cooper then singled Logan to third and advanced to second on the throw. Jamie Dotson and Sheila McCorkle each singled bringing in three and a passed ball brought in the fourth run to make it 4-0 after one.

The Wildcats increased their lead in the bottom of the third when Dotson hit a two run home run scoring Cooper, who walked to get aboard.

KU got its first run on the board in the top of the fourth when Moppin led off the inning with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a walk by junior Nicole Washburn, Kassie Humphreys hit a grounder to the shortstop that scored Moppin to make the score, 6-1.

Kansas added its second run in the top of the seventh when senior Heather Stanley walked with two outs and senior Destiny Frankenstein tripled to drive in Stanley, making it 6-2.

Kansas will be back in action on Saturday, March 25 as it opens Big 12 play against Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.
