Postgame Quotes

Kansas 4, No. 1 Texas 3

March 22, 2009 – Lawrence, Kan.

Kansas head coach Ritch Price:

On the importance of sweeping Texas:

“I think that Division I baseball is all about winning series, if you win series then you will be in the NCAA Tournament. Once you win the first two (games), the third game is obviously low-pressure. The big thing is that is a three-game swing today, if you lose you are only one game above five hundred but if you win you are three games (above .500). This sweep has an unbelievable impact in a short nine-series Big 12 season.”

On seeing the team’s potential early in the season:

“I really liked our pitching (heading into the season). I thought that potentially, starting pitching-wise, we were deep enough to get three quality starts every weekend, which has been the case. I think that the fact that we had to go on the road and play nationally ranked opponents prepared us properly for this weekend.”

On the performance of Paul Smyth:

“When you look and see that he has blown three saves earlier in the season against nationally ranked opponents and for him to come back out and hold onto three one-run games speaks volumes about him. He is a great competitor and relishes the opportunity to compete at a high level. Like anything when you have had a couple hiccups, your confidence level can be a bit deflated. I was really proud of how tough he showed me he was this weekend.”
