Jayhawk Close Desert Shootout in Eighth Place

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Kansas Jayhawks closed Desert Shootout by shooting the fifth-best round for the second consecutive day, but could only climb halfway out of their first-round hole and finished eighth out of 16 teams with a combined 291-283-291–865 (+13) at Palm Valley Golf Course Saturday.
KU climbed four spots in Friday’s second round after finishing the first 18 holes next to last, then rose another three positions Saturday before running out of rounds to play. BYU claimed the tournament title with a 14-under 838 and saw its leader Zach Blair claim the top medalist honors with a 66-68-64–198 (-15).
Chris Gilbert led the Jayhawks in scoring and finished one-over-par for the tournament in 16th place at 70-72-72–214. Alex Gutesha also shot a 1-over 72 in Saturday’s final round and was one-stroke behind Gilbert in 23rd with a tally of 72-71-72–215 (+2). Competing as an individual, Bryce Brown joined Gutesha and five other golfers tied for 23rd while closing with a 69-73-73–215 (+2).
The Jayhawks used a 74 from Stan Gautier in the final round and Ryley Haas carded his second-consecutive round of 73 to round out the team scoring. Gautier finished in the top third of the leaderboard in a three-way tie for 30th after finishing 3-over 216 for the event. Haas finished tied for 66th at 10-over 223 and Dylan McClure, the final member of KU’s scoring lineup, tied for 71st with an 11-over 224.
Kansas will travel to the Irish Creek Collegiate (April 6-7) in Charlotte, N.C. in two weeks to play the first of its last two events before the Big 12 Championships (April 22-24) in Hutchinson, Kan.
