Jayhawks Win Marathon from Baylor, 12-6 in 14 Innings

Kansas Bullpen Flawless Sunday
WACO, Texas –
Senior second baseman Robby Price collected three hits and a career-high six RBIs, while junior relief pitcher Brett Bochy tossed six hitless innings of relief as Kansas earned its first-ever series win at Baylor, taking the rubber game 12-6 in 14 innings Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
The Jayhawks improve to 15-9 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12 Conference. Prior to the weekend, KU was 1-20 all-time against Baylor in Waco. The Bears fall to 13-9 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12.
Kansas scored six runs in the deciding inning with three bases loaded walks, a two-run single by Jordan Dreiling and an RBI single by Jimmy Waters.
Waters started the 14th, reaching on an error and moved into scoring position when Jake Marasco was hit by a pitch. After a failed sacrifice and a walk to Brett Lisher, Brandon Macias forced home the go-ahead run when he was hit by a pitch.
After a strikeout, Price and Brian Heere both collected walks with the bases full to give Kansas a three-run advantage. Dreiling, who entered the game in the fourth inning for Tony Thompson, delivered the big blow. The freshman’s single up the middle drove in two runs. Waters then drove in KU’s sixth run of the inning with another RBI single.
Bochy, a junior from Poway, Calif., anchored the Kansas bullpen which allowed no runs and no hits after Baylor scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning. Bochy retired 18 straight Baylor batters after entering the game in the ninth inning. The junior picked up his second victory of the season, recording four strikeouts in six innings.
The Bears scored six runs on seven hits to chase Kansas starter Brett Bollman after three innings, and then had just four base runners – all walks – after the third.
KU used three other relief pitchers – Tanner Poppe, Wally Marciel and Colton Murray – to hold the fort. Meanwhile, KU tied the score at six on Price’s two-run single in the top of the sixth inning.
As they did in the first two games of the series, the Jayhawks jumped out to an early lead on the strength of an RBI double by Thompson and a bases loaded double by Price.
Thompson had to leave the game in the fourth inning due to a severe nose bleed.
Kansas set several team and individual records Sunday. The Jayhawks’ 14-inning game was the longest Big 12 game in team history, and the longest KU game since a 15-inning affair with Wichita State in 1992.
Junior Casey Lytle tied a school-record, being hit by a pitch in three different plate appearances. Price’s six RBIs were the most by a Jayhawk this season, and the most since Zac Elgie’s six-RBI game against Dartmouth in last year’s NCAA Tournament.
Kansas (15-9) will return home Tuesday to take on Arkansas-Little Rock at 3 p.m. at Hoglund Ballpark.
