Jayhawks Face No. 50 K-State in Sunflower Showdown

March 29, 2013

STILLWATER, Okla. – No. 74 Kansas and No. 50 Kansas State will face off in this year’s Sunflower Showdown for women’s tennis at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jayhawk Tennis Center. The Wildcats have won each of the past four meetings in the series — three in the regular season and once in the Big 12 tournament. None of the members of this year’s KU squad were with the program when the Jayhawks defeated K-State in Lawrence on April 8, 2009. K-State has played one of the nation’s toughest dual schedules this season, currently sitting at 6-6 with all six losses coming to ranked teams. The Wildcats are on a two-match winning streak, defeating Cal Poly and Fresno State after four consecutive losses to top 40 teams. Head coach Steve Bietau’s squad is led by junior Petra Niedermayerova, who reached the highest individual ranking of her career this week. Not only is she No. 11 in the ITA Women’s Division I Singles Rankings, but she is also ranked No. 45 in doubles with senior Partner Karla Bonacic. Kansas is coming off a 6-1 loss at Oklahoma State on Wednesday, moving the Jayhawks to 0-2 in Big 12 play. KU is 8-4 overall this season, with all eight wins coming in non-conference play.
