Hile's Grand Slam Helps Softball to 5-1 Win Over UMKC

Junior Brittany Hile hit a grand slam in the third inning to score Kansas softball’s first runs of the game while senior Sarah Vertelka tossed seven strong innings to help KU to a 5-1 victory in its first game of a doubleheader versus UMKC Tuesday afternoon.

Kansas and UMKC will play again tonight at approximately 6 p.m.

After two scoreless innings, Hile hit a grand slam in the third frame, her fourth home run of the season, to give Kansas a 4-0 lead.

Freshman Alex Jones tacked on one more run for the Jayhawks in the next inning when her single up the middle plated senior Sara Ramirez.

Kansas racked up nine total hits during the game including three from Jones. Hile also had multiple hits going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Vertelka threw her seventh complete game as she improved to 6-11 from the circle. She allowed just one earned run and gave up no walks while striking out three.

UMKC scored its lone run in the top of the fourth inning on back-to-back-to-back singles. The Kangaroos stranded four runners in scoring position during the game.
