Marcus Morris Named Wooden All-American

March 30, 2011

LOS ANGELES – Kansas junior Marcus Morris was named to the John R. Wooden Award All-American team announced Tuesday by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The national honor is the second this week for Morris as he was named Associated Press All-America Second Team Monday.

Morris led Kansas in scoring in 2010-11 with a 17.2 scoring average. The 6-9 Philadelphia, Pa., native ranks among the national leaders in field goal percentage at 57.0 percent and his 7.6 rebounds per contest were second on the team. He had two of his nine double-doubles on the season in the NCAA Tournament and he was named to NCAA Southwest Regional All-Tournament team on Sunday.

Named the Most Outstanding Player of the Big 12 Championship, Morris averaged 17.7 points in the three victories of the event. He averaged 18.8 points in league play in 2011. A 2011 USBWA All-America Second Team selection, Morris was named the 2011 Big 12 Player of the Year and All-Big 12 First Team by the league coaches and had 12 games with 20-plus points. He has led KU in every statistical category at least once during the season. Morris was named Big 12 Player of the Week three times (Nov. 29, Jan. 17 and Feb. 14), a Wooden Award Finalist March 13, a Naismith Mid-Season candidate Feb. 11 and an Oscar Robertson Award finalist Feb. 28.

Last season, Kansas’ Sherron Collins was named Wooden All-American. In the Bill Self era at Kansas, 2003-04 to present, Wooden All-Americans have included Wayne Simien (2005), Brandon Rush (2007, 2008), Collins (2010) and Morris (2011).

Kansas finished the season 35-3, posting its 10th overall and fourth 30-win season in the last five years. The Jayhawks won their seventh straight, 11th Big 12 and NCAA-leading conference regular-season with a 14-2 league record.
