Kevin Ward Named Golf World Magazine Player Of The Week

April 1, 2005

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

University of Kansas senior golfer Kevin Ward was named Golf World Magazine college Player of the Week on Friday, April 1, after a career-best 64 in the second round of the Colorado-Stevinson Ranch Invitational helped the senior from Leawood, Kan., cruise to an eight-under 208 and a six-shot win over Kansas State’s Ben Kern. Ward’s performance also led the Jayhawks to their second-straight win in the event, and sixth in the last seven years.

“He shot lights out on a really hard golf course,” head coach Ross Randall said. “He has been our team leader all year. He does everything you could want from a player whether it be on the course, in practice or in workouts. Overall he has had a good, solid year.”

Ward holds a 71.23 stroke average this spring which ties him for the team lead with sophomore Tyler Docking. Ward has three individual tournament titles to his credit and has also recorded 10 top-10 finishes in his KU career.

“It means a lot to me to get that honor” Ward said. “I was pleased with my performance, but what meant the most was the fact that it helped our team win. That is the most important thing.”

Ward and the Jayhawks will next be in action at the Courtyard by Marriot Intercollegiate in Holly Springs, N.C. on April 8-9.
