The Jayhawks improve to 19-13 overall, while the Spires fall to 13-13.

After being shut out in the final eight innings Tuesday evening against Wichita State, the Kansas bats woke up in a big way. KU plated 13 runs in the game on 15 hits as 10 different players collected base hits.

Berner started things in the bottom of the second with a two-run double that plated Ryne Price and Preston Land. Price delivered two more runs in the third with a single to center. It marked the senior’s 38th and 39th runs batted in this season.

KU broke the game open in the fifth. The Jayhawks sent 11 men to the plate in the inning and scored seven runs on six hits. All seven runs were scored with two outs. With two outs and Buck Afenir on first, Erik Morrison doubled and Preston Land walked in front of five straight base hits, including an RBI triple by Robby Price.

This was more than enough support for Wally Marciel and the Kansas pitching staff. The sophomore lefty bounced back after a couple of rocky starts, pitching three hitless innings with five strikeouts. KU’s tandem of relievers – Brett Bochy, Matt Lane, Hiarali Garcia, Daniel Manos, Max Ellenbecker and Thomas Marcin – managed to hold the Spires scoreless on four hits.

John Allman, Matt Berner and Robby Price all had two hits for KU, while Brian Heere collected a two-run single in the sixth.

The Jayhawks will travel to No. 29 Baylor this weekend for a three-game Big 12 series in Waco. First pitch Friday evening is set for 6:30 p.m.
