KU Swimmer Makes Guest Appearance on Student Sports Talk Show

April 5, 2012

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas senior captain Stephanie Payne made a familiar trip to the Dole Human Development Center this week but it was not for a class, instead the journalism major stepped inside the KUJH-TV studios as a special guest on “Jayhawk Sports Talk”.

The Derby, Kan. native sat alongside hosts Andrew Curtis and Victoria Baldwin and discussed a variety of topics during the three minute segment. Those included her favorite swimming memory at KU to her future plans outside of the pool. The IM and butterfly specialist looked back at her senior season with the two student hosts and recalled this year’s training trip to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico as one of her favorite memories during her four-year KU career.

“That was probably one of the best times because the past three years (for training trips), we went to Florida and California,” she said about her experience.

Payne finished up her senior season at Big 12’s in February and has since been training for the Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb., where she will compete June 25-July 2.

Jayhawk Sports Talk runs Sunday-Thursday each week during the course of a semester from 6-6:30pm. The broadcast is part of a class (Journalism 488), which is offered to students in the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

The JST broadcast from April 3rd is accessible here: http://tv.ku.edu/2012/04/03/kujh-tv-jayhawk-sports-talk-april-3-2012/ and here: http://vimeo.com/39771653. The interview with Payne can be found starting at the 19:25 mark, which lasts until the break at 22:25.

This is not the first time this season a Kansas swimmer has been featured on a TV or Internet broadcast. Payne sat alongside fellow senior captain Shannon Garlie in January, as they were interviewed by Peter Busch on the ‘Morning Swim Show’ of Swimming World TV.
