Kansas Rowing to Compete in Knecht Cup Saturday and Sunday

April 7, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas rowing will compete in the Knecht Cup this weekend April 9-10 in Camden, N.J. Coming off a weekend in which all six boats improved upon their times from the previous regatta, KU will look to continue that success in the two-day event hosted by Villanova.

Kansas will face some strong competition at the regatta, including a few teams that KU doesn’t see very often during the season.

“There are going to be 30 or 40 East Coast Division I schools at the Knecht Cup,” said Kansas head rowing coach Rob Catloth. “There will be some ACC schools. Duke is probably going to be the top-seeded team. There will be some really good competition for us.”

Kansas will compete in six events over the weekend. Five of the entries will compete in heat races of six boats Saturday trying to post times fast enough to advance to the semifinals. The Women’s Second Novice Eight Team will not need to compete in heat races on Saturday. Instead, it will only race once on Sunday in the final against North Carolina and Fordham.

Catloth said the heat races leading up to a semifinal and final will be good experiences for the Kansas rowing team.

“There will be a heat, semifinal, final progression that we really need this time of year to sort things out and get several times down the course. It will provide some good racing experience for us and allow us to figure out where we are against other crews.”

Upon returning from the Knecht Cup, Kansas will have a weekend off from competition before hosting Kansas State in the Kansas Cup April 23 and the Big 12 Rowing Championship on April 30. Both of those regattas will be held at Wyandotte County Lake in Kansas City, Kan.
