Jayhawk Tennis Wins Sunflower Showdown, 5-2

April 8, 2009

In its first midweek match of the season, the Kansas women’s tennis team clinched the Sunflower Showdown against Kansas State, 5-2, at First Serve Tennis Center Wednesday afternoon. The victory made Kansas 9-10 overall and 4-5 in the Big 12 Conference. Kansas started strong in doubles action, making short work of the Wildcats and taking matches at the one and three positions to go up 1-0. The Jayhawks are now 5-0 this season when they win the doubles point. Freshmen Kate Morozova and Erin Wilbert continued the trend from doubles play, dispatching their opponents in quick straight sets. Sophomore Maria Martinez followed suit, defeating Natasha Vieira 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot. Julie Svistun rounded out the straight set matches, winning 6-4, 6-1, over KSU’s No. 3 player, Nina Sertic. With the match already decided, Kuni Dorn and Edina Horvath each played three-set tiebreakers. Both lost, 10-7, to bring the final team score to 5-2 in favor of KU. Kansas is in action again when it hosts Tulane at First Serve Tennis Center on Friday. Match time is set for 2 p.m. Please check back with kuathletics.com for live scoring updates and results.
