LAWRENCE, Kan. –

In its first midweek match of the season, the Kansas women’s tennis team clinched the Sunflower Showdown against Kansas State, 5-2, at First Serve Tennis Center Wednesday afternoon. The victory made Kansas 9-10 overall and 4-5 in the Big 12 Conference. The Jayhawks are now 5-0 this season when they win the doubles point. Freshmen Kate Morozova and Erin Wilbert continued the trend from doubles play, dispatching their opponents in quick straight sets. Sophomore Maria Martinez followed suit, defeating Natasha Vieira 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot. Julie Svistun rounded out the straight set matches, winning 6-4, 6-1, over KSU’s No. 3 player, Nina Sertic. With the match already decided, Kuni Dorn and Edina Horvath each played three-set tiebreakers. Both lost, 10-7, to bring the final team score to 5-2 in favor of KU.
