Kansas Set to Host K-State in Kansas Cup

April 10, 2008

LAWRENCE, Kan.

– Kansas Rowing will renew its annual spring battle with in-state rival Kansas State Saturday morning, in Kansas City, Kan., at Wyandotte County Lake. The regatta, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., is Kansas’ lone home regatta of the season because of construction on the new boathouse on the Kansas River in Lawrence, Kan. The duel will feature six Jayhawk boats competing in four races.

KU last battled Kansas State on November 10, 2007 in Manhattan, Kan. The Jayhawks jumped out to a 9-3 advantage behind novice race victories. K-State, however, took the three varsity races, to come out on top 16-9. The varsity races were contested at a high level, as the Wildcats defeated the ‘Hawks by seven combined seconds in the First and Second Varsity Eight races.

However, last year in Lawrence, Kansas defeated K-State 12-10. KU won the regatta’s most important event, the First Varsity Eight race, by 2.5 seconds. Kansas also recorded victories in the Varsity and Novice Four races.

This weekend’s regatta will mark KU’s second live competition in the spring. Two weeks ago Kansas battled a seasoned Texas squad, but came up short in all races.

The Jayhawks will be looking to build off that season-opening effort when it goes against K-State on Senior Day. Kansas will honor four seniors on Saturday: Alia Bober, Kara Boston, Hailee Jones and Elisheva Patterson.
