LAWRENCE, Kan.– –

Kansas softball could not fuel a comeback after an early deficit and lost 8-0 to No. 13/11 Oklahoma Friday at Arrocha Ballpark in the first game of a two-game series. The loss dropped Kansas to 13-23 overall and 3-6 in the conference, while Oklahoma improved to 31-12 and 8-3 in Big 12 play.

The Sooners came out hot, taking a 5-0 lead in the first inning off three hits and two Kansas errors.

KU starter Sarah Vertelka held OU scoreless and gave up just one hit over the next four innings until the sixth inning, when the Sooners expanded their lead to 8-0.

The Sooners totaled eight hits during the game, including two doubles. OU’s DJ Mathis pitched a solid outing limiting the Jayhawks to one hit in six innings and walking three batters.

Sophomore Brittany Hile had KU’s lone hit of the game, a double in the third inning.

Vertelka pitched five and two thirds innings until freshman Sarah Blair came in, immediately striking out the batter and tallying the third out of the inning. This marked Blair’s first appearance in the circle since the Jayhawks played Missouri State on March 24.
