Postgame Quotes

Kansas 8, No. 17 Oklahoma State 1

April 10, 2009 – Lawrence, Kan.

On playing a clean game:

“I actually told the guys after the game, that until Preston Land kicked the routine play with two outs in the ninth, that tonight was the cleanest game that we have played all year. We had outstanding starting pitching. We were facing a first round draft pick (Andrew Oliver) and we had to match him zero for zero and I thought that Shaeffer Hall was excellent. We also made two or three really good defensive plays early in the game. We executed our short game offense and got some two out RBIs, it was a very, very complete performance.”

On the development of Shaeffer Hall:

“I think he’s really continued to mature. He was (throwing) 82-84 (mph) his senior year of high school. Last year he was (throwing) between 84-86 (mph). As he’s matured, gotten stronger and worked hard in the weight room, his velocity has improved. If you can make people honor your fastball, it sets up your offspeed pitches, which allows him to be really effective. That’s what he is, a four-pitch guy.”

On the defense behind Shaeffer Hall:

“Oklahoma State hit a couple of hard line drives hard early in the game, but (Brian) Heere makes a diving catch in right and Lytle makes a sliding catch in left. Then after that I thought that Shaeffer did a really nice job keeping them off speed. He was able to locate his fastball and mix in both his breaking ball and his change up.”

On being picked last in the Big 12 preseason rankings:

“You can be a tenth place team in this conference and still be one of the top 40 teams in the nation. That is literally what it is like to play in our league every week. This is our fifth-straight weekend of facing someone in the top 25. If we had done a little better job closing out some teams at the end of the game (earlier in the season), we would be in the top 25 right now. We were prepared to play tonight.”
