Jayhawks Rout UMKC 7-2 to Sweep Softball Doubleheader

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Senior Dougie McCaulley went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Kansas softball team to a 7-2 rout of the UMKC Kangaroos in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday night. KU, which improved to 16-23 and has now won three games in a row, won the first game 8-0 in five innings.

The Jayhawks resume conference play this weekend, April 18-19, when they head to Texas for a two-game Big 12 series. KU and Texas are scheduled to play at 1 p.m. on Saturday then again at noon on Sunday. Kansas will wrap up a three-game road trip at Tulsa on Tuesday, April 21.

Game 1 – KU 8, UMKC 0

Behind two hits from first basemen Amanda Jobe, including a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the fifth, Kansas softball run-ruled UMKC 8-0 at Arrocha Ballpark on Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader. Kansas pitcher Sarah Vertelka picked up the victory, her sixth of the season, allowing only two hits and no runs in five full innings pitched.

The Jayhawks improve to 15-23 with the victory. UMKC fell to 14-28.

The Jayhawks started the game with three runs in the first inning led by an RBI single to right field by Liz Kocon and a two RBI double to center from Allie Clark.

Kansas had seven hits in the game, including four in the fifth inning to score five more runs for the Jayhakws and to earn the run-rule.

Clark finished the game with 4 RBIs off of 2-for-3 hitting, both of which were doubles.

Game 2 – KU 7, UMKC 2

The Jayhawks led off the night with a four-run second inning off four hits. McCaulley batted in the first run on an RBI single to left field. Senior Val Chapple followed with her third triple of the season to score two more runs for the Jayhawks. Chapple later stole home for the final run of the inning.

UMKC (14-29) added two runs in the top of the fourth closing the gap to two runs at 4-2, but Kansas countered with a run in the bottom of the inning when McCaulley stole home.

Sophomore Brittany Hile doubled in the fifth inning to bat in a run, while junior Alicia Irwin picked up her first hit of the season in the bottom of the sixth, a double, to plate KU’s final run of the game.

Freshmen pitcher Sarah Blair recorded her first win for the Crimson and Blue in her second career start, as she tossed four innings allowing four runs and striking out two batters to improve to 1-3 on the season.
