LAWRENCE, Kan. – Jayhawk starting pitcher Thomas Taylor held Texas A&M to one run on four hits, while senior catcher James Stanfield collected three hits as Kansas earned a 5-3 win over the second-ranked Aggies to take the final contest of the three-game series Sunday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.

The win improved Kansas to 13-23 overall and 3-9 in conference play, while A&M fell to 28-8 and 9-3 in the Big 12.

Taylor gave up his only run in the top of the first on a Matt Juengel RBI single, but was in charge from that point on. The redshirt junior picked up his fourth victory of the season, going seven innings and allowing just the one run. It was his third quality start in his last five outings.

Taylor’s offense gave him a lead in their half of the first. KU loaded the bases after back-to-back singles by Kevin Kuntz and Stanfield as well as a walk to Alex DeLeon. Senior Zac Elgie and junior Jordan Dreiling then delivered consecutive RBI singles to give KU a 2-1 advantage.

The Jayhawks their pitcher some breathing room in the sixth when Dreiling led off the inning with a double and came around to score when the Aggie bullpen walked three of the next five hitters, including Kuntz to push home KU’s third run of the day.

Stanfield collected his third hit of the afternoon with a solid single to left, putting the Jayhawks ahead 4-1.

After Kansas scored a run in the seventh on Jake Marasco’s RBI double, Texas A&M made things interesting in the ninth, scoring two runs off junior Tanner Poppe. The Kansas relief pitcher fanned catcher Troy Stein with the bases loaded to end the game emphatically.

Poppe worked two innings and retired three Aggies via strikeouts.

Stanfield led the offense with three hits, marking his eighth multi-hit game of the season and third game with three hits. Kuntz and Dreiling each chipped in a pair of singles as well.

The win stopped an eight-game losing streak by the Jayhawks. It also marked KU’s first victory over a Top 25 opponent this season.

The Jayhawks will look to keep its momentum going Tuesday with a midweek home game against Baker University at 6 p.m.
