KU's Piché Tabbed Top Big 12 Newcomer For Second-Straight Week

April 15, 2013

LAWRENCE, Kan. – For the second week in a row, Kansas junior relief pitcher Jordan Piché has been named the Big 12 Conference’s Newcomer of the Week. Piché recorded a win and a save in KU’s first series victory over Texas since 2009 this past weekend.

The junior becomes the first Jayhawk to be honored on the conference’s weekly awards in back-to-back weeks since 2010 when Robby Price was tabbed Big 12 Player of the Week on consecutive Mondays.

Piché, a 6-foot-1 right-handed pitcher from Greeley, Colo., did not allow a run in six innings of work, which spanned two relief appearances. Piché earned his fifth victory of the season on Friday night, pitching the final 4 1/3 innings in KU’s 12-inning win.

The 6-foot-1 righty then tossed 1 2/3 innings to save KU’s 4-3 triumph in the rubber game Sunday. He currently leads the Big 12 with a 0.49 ERA in 36 2/3 innings and is tied for the conference lead with seven saves. Piché is 5-1 on the year with 25 strikeouts and three walks in 17 relief appearances.

Piché and the Jayhawks travel to Omaha, Neb., for a non-conference game against Creighton at T.D. Ameritrade Stadium Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. Fans can listen to the game on KLWN Radio (1320 AM) or AT&T Jayhawk All-Access.
