Gutesha Named Academic All-Big 12 Second Team

April 18, 2012

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas communications studies major Alex Gutesha earned Academic All-Big 12 Second Team recognition it was announced by the conference office Wednesday.

Gutesha, a junior from Greenwood Village, Colo., received all-conference academic accolades for the second time in his career. To qualify for academic recognition, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.0 grade-point average – either cumulative or in the previous two semesters – and have participated in at least 60 percent of his team’s scheduled contests. Gutesha was one of 22 league members named to the men’s list.

On the course, Gutesha registered three top-15 finishes in the fall, including an eighth-place showing at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate when he shot a 210 (-3), which included a career-best round of 66. Gutesha also notched a top-10 finish at the rain-shortened Cardinal Intercollegiate with rounds of 73 and 71.

“It’s a great honor for Alex,” said Kansas head coach Kit Grove. “He obviously works very hard in the classroom as well as on the golf course. He’s our team captain and a great kid. As a coach, you wish you had 10 of him on your team. He works hard, and he’s a competitor. It’s nice for him to be recognized and get rewarded for the effort and time he puts in on both his schoolwork and his golf.”

Kansas men’s golf recently concluded its regular season at the Western Intercollegiate. The Jayhawks will compete in the Big 12 Championship April 27-29 at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.
