LAWRENCE, Kan. – Freshman right-handed pitcher Drew Morovick and four other pitchers combined to toss a five-hit shutout Wednesday evening as the Jayhawks blanked Saint Mary, 6-0, in a non-conference baseball game at Hoglund Ballpark.

The Jayhawks win their third-straight, marking the team’s longest winning streak since taking the first four games of the year. KU improved to 15-23 overall, while the Spires fall to 17-25.

Morovick gave the Jayhawks dominating innings, which allowed his offense to grab the lead. The freshman righty, who had to miss his last start at Wichita State due to illness, pitched five innings and allowed no runs on two hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts.

After a two-out single by Saint Mary shortstop Devin Hupp, the Spires were held without a base runner until the fifth inning as Morovick set down 10 men in a row. The freshman needed just 44 pitches to get through his five innings of work.

Meanwhile, KU built their pitching staff a small, yet decisive lead early. After Kevin Kuntz reached on an infield hit with one out in the first, senior Zac Elgie collected an RBI double off the wall in left field, which gave KU a 1-0 lead. Elgie came around to score on a sacrifice fly after a pair of walks loaded the bases in the first with one out.

The Jayhawks added to the lead in the fourth on an RBI double by Ka’iana Eldredge, which plated Jordan Dreiling from first base. KU put the game away with two runs in the sixth as Michael Suiter singled to left with the bases loaded and Kuntz brought in another run with an RBI ground out.

KU’s bullpen finished what Morovick started, tossing four scoreless innings, including a pair by freshman Colin Toalson. The first-year righting allowed one hit in two innings of work and recorded a strikeout. Senior Matt Kohorst pitched a scoreless eighth and Jaydee Jurgensen and Taylor Rappaport combined on a perfect ninth.

Eight different Jayhawk hitters recorded base hits, while six different players collected RBIs.

KU will return to Big 12 play this weekend when it travels to Austin, Texas for a three-game series against 23rd-ranked Texas. The series opens on Friday at 7 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
