KU Shuts Out No. 24 Huskers

LINCOLN, Neb. –

Freshman lefty Christina Ross struck out five and allowed just three hits as the University of Kansas softball team defeated No. 24 Nebraska, 2-0, Wednesday night at Bowlin Stadium.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Ross (9-6) got her third shut out of the season while the Jayhawks improved to 20-18 overall and 3-7 in the Big 12 Conference. With the loss, the Huskers moved to 27-16 and 5-6 in league play.

The KU offense collected seven hits off Ashley DeBuhr (17-14), the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week. DeBuhr struck out seven and walked none in the complete-game effort.

The Jayhawks scored their game winning runs in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Destiny Frankenstein blasted a solo home run – her ninth of the season – over the scoreboard in left field. Serena Settlemier singled and Nettie Fierros doubled off the center field wall for the RBI, giving KU a 2-0 lead.

Settlemier and Jessica Moppin paced the Jayhawks with two hits apiece. KU stranded just three runners on base in the win.

KU will take a break from conference action to play a doubleheader at No. 21 Creighton Thursday beginning at 2 p.m.
