April 22, 2005

AUSTIN, Texas –

The University of Kansas women’s golf team is in ninth place, in a 12-team field, after carding a 311 in the opening round of the Big 12 Championships held at the University of Texas G.C. in Austin, Texas.

“I am disappointed at the way we finished,” head coach Erin O’Neil said. “We had a chance to finish much higher and we just faltered. You can’t do that at these types of events.”

Oklahoma State currently leads the tournament with a 295, followed by Texas at 297.

Junior Chelsey Pryor led the Jayhawks with a 73 and is currently in a tie for fourth . Junior Meredith Winkelmann is tied for 26th after an opening round score of 78. Sophomore Amanda Costner, who had to take an 11 on the 18th hole, shot a 79 and is in a tie for 36th. Freshman Annie Giangrosso is in 47th with an 81. Sophomore Jill Womble is in 60th with after shooting a 92.

“I was pleased with the way Chelsey played,” O’Neil said. “Luckily we have two more rounds and I know we will play much better.”

The Jayhawks will begin second round action at 8 a.m. Central time. For live scoring and more information on the Big 12 Championships, visit www.big12sports.com.
